An exploration of the personal and symbolic world of Paño Art through an interactive exhibit honoring the creative voices of incarcerated Chicano artists.
My Role
As part of a cross-functional team, I collaborated with developers to design an interactive digital exhibit that highlights the Paño artworks and their symbolism—leading the UX and visual design process.
The National Hispanic Cultural Center wanted to share the deeply personal artwork of incarcerated Chicano artists in a way that honored their stories and cultural context. The challenge was to present a large and complex collection—over 160 pieces of Paño art—through an experience that was accessible to visitors and sustainable for staff to maintain.
The Solution
Our team collaborated with the National Hispanic Cultural Center to design the Paño Collection Explorer—an interactive digital exhibit celebrating the creativity and voices of incarcerated artists. Visitors can explore artworks and artist interviews through a touch-based interface featuring bilingual-ready content and a built-in symbolism guide. A custom content management system enables Cultural Center staff to expand and update the collection over time, ensuring the exhibit remains a living and evolving tribute to cultural expression and resilience.
